SETTLERS

In 2019/20 I edited this dystopian sci-fi movie that was written and directed by Wyatt Rockefeller.

Remmy and her parents, refugees from Earth, have found peace on the Martian outskirts—until strangers appear in the hills beyond their farm. Told as a triptych, the film follows Remmy as she struggles to survive in a hostile landscape.

Shot on the remote border of South Africa and Namibia, the film stars Sofia Boutella (Atomic Blonde, The Mummy), Ismael Cruz Cordova (Miss Bala, Mary Queen of Scots), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), Nell Tiger Free (Game of Thrones), and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) and is produced by Josh Horsfeld and Julie Fabrizio for Jericho Pictures.

THE MESSAGE – BBC3 sketch show

Broadcast on BBC3 TV in 2006, THE MESSAGE was a development of my BBCR4 sketch show ‘Radio9’ and was similarly based around a broadcaster (‘The Message’) whose programming was submerged and usurped by a deluge of terrible promos and inappropriate advertising. So quite like actual television.

‘Nosebleed-inducingly funny, The Message takes a sledgehammer to all that is smug, self-regarding and pompous about Public Service broadcasting. There’s a distinct danger that this will be mistaken for real programming’. – Time Out

EVERYTHING BUT THE SCORE – song composition for film & TV

Over the years I’ve written soundtracks for various of my own projects; Radio9, Acts of Godfrey, Wonder, Cracking Up, as well as title music for MTV, Rapido and Channel 4. Whilst editing the film Finding Your Feet I wrote all of the incidental songs as well as the film’s title song ‘Running To The Future’ which was sung by Elkie Brooks.

In 2017 I produced several songs for Channel 4’s sci-fi series Electric Dreams including a cover of Syd Barrat’s ‘Octopus’ with Robyn Hitchcock and Graham Coxon.

CRACKING UP – BBCR4 sitcom

I wrote the first series of CRACKING UP in 2016. It details the narcissistic and controlling Psychotherapist Spencer Pandy’s attempts to inveigle himself into the lives of his ex-wife and children. The second series was produced in early 2018 and broadcast in January 2019. CRACKING UP was recorded exclusively in real locations and has an unusual production quality for a radio sitcom. I composed the soundtrack having listened to a bunch of home-keyboard demos on You Tube and attempted to communicate that effervescence and jaunty sense of joie de vivre.

ACTS OF GODFREY – trailer

In 2011 I wrote, directed and composed the movie ACTS OF GODFREY. The film is unique in that it is written throughout in rhyming couplets. To this day i’ve no idea why (suffice to say it was a poem that got out of hand). Although intended to be irreverent, bawdy and more akin to a Carry On film, the distributor and PR company decided to promote it as ‘a modern twist on Shakespeare’. A description that made my blood run cold, as it turned out, with some justification.

ACTS OF GODFREY opened the Raindance Film Festival in 2011 and was nominated for Best Film at the British Independent Film Awards 2011.

In 2018/19 I edited and co-produced this film which was written by Nick Moorcroft & Meg Leonard and directed by Chris Foggin. A heart-warming tale of community and lost values, the film has been an outstanding success both critically and at the box office.

WONDER – short film

In 2012, having written the album of songs based around a decaying relationship, I scripted WONDER and re-mixed instrumentals of the songs as the score. The film follows four couples over a night and day as they are seen to be falling apart, whilst simultaneously being drawn into each other’s worlds.

WONDER was premiered at Raindance Film Festival in 2012 and featured at the New York City Film Festival the same year.

Having attended a screening, the actor Tom Wilkinson was moved to describe the film as ‘the most beautiful love story’. WONDER was seen by the director Richard Loncraine who would later ask me to edit Finding Your Feet.

In 2017 I edited this film which was written by Nick Moorcroft & Meg Leonard and directed by Richard Loncraine. In true Dennis Waterman style, I also wrote and produced the theme song, ‘Running To The Future’ which was sung by Elkie Brooks.‘Finding Your Feet finds its own footing by putting its trust in its sturdy performers and avoiding many of the usual tea-time clichés as it allows its British cast to be defined by their relatable human circumstances’. – Roger Ebert.com

MUSIC: SONGWRITER & MUSICIAN

FIN – band

I was the writer/singer/guitarist in the Indie band FIN between ’93 and ’95. In that time we played around 150 gigs across most of the UK. We supported (or were supported by) Supegrass, The Cranberries, Elastica, Catatonia, Gene, Sleeper, Ocean Colour Scene, Tindersticks and the Beatles. We released 4 singles; Headstrong, Narcissus, Moisturizer, Jetstream and an album ‘Positive’. Despite self-releasing on our own ‘Red’ label, the songs received extensive national airplay (Headstrong was B-listed by Radio 1). We played live on BBCR1, Virgin and GLR. We formed a relationship with the legendary plugger Scott Piering who regarded me as ‘the second-best writer of the era…after Jarvis Cocker’. Could be worse…

On splitting the band for the inevitable ‘creative differences’ I formed a new band SENNA between ’96 and ’97. We recorded an extensive catalogue and played New York’s CBGB’s. In the audience was Hugo Burnham of Gang of Four who described it as ‘one of the best gigs i’ve ever seen…and Johnny wore a dress, which is always great’.

On the demise of SENNA I signed a publishing deal with Chrysalis Music and used the advance to build my own 24 track studio, developing production and engineering techniques. I was an early-adopter of ProTools which I continue to use today in music and film production.
